Mumbai Dabbawala

Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute of Management Studies & Research had organized a guest lecture on Mumbai Dabbawla for the students of MMS and PGDM. The speaker for the lecture was Mr. Subhash Talekar – President, Mumbai Dabbawala Association.

The session was conducted on 23rd Feb, 2019 @ 8 am. Mr. Ganapati Kattige – Examination Controller, SVIMS felicitated Mr. Subhash Talekar, while Mr. Unmesh Kandalgaonkar – PGDM student, introduced him.

In his lecture Mr.Talekar explained how they famed Dabbawalas with a strength of 5000 men , mostly illiterate people, deliver and take back nearly 200,000 lunch boxes each day at Mumbai with an accuracy of less than one mistake in 6 million deliveries , which earned them the coveted ‘six sigma ‘certification and caught international attention. With zero attrition rate and highest customer satisfaction, Dabbawalas have become a live case study in many international B-schools.

He recalled how even England’s Prince Charles’ meeting with Dabbawalas had to be scheduled during their meagre spare time in front of Church gate Station and Virgin Airlines Chairman Sir Richard Branson had to travel with them in the luggage compartment of Mumbai local train to be with them, so that customer deliveries were not affected !

Between 175,000 or 200,000 lunches get moved every day by an estimated 4,500 to 5,000 Dabbawalas, all with an extremely small nominal fee and with utmost punctuality.

Dabbawalas have become an example of hard work, time management, supply chain management success, team work and simple management skills, so much so that now they are invited to deliver lectures to India’s top management colleges.

The session was concluded with Prof. Deepan Bhatt presenting the SVIMS memento to Mr. Talekar and proposing vote of thanks.

For the students of SVIMS it was a great learning experience. They listened with rapt attention overall it was a great learning experience for them.
